Hong Kong Brokers Fight to Keep Lunch Break

Thousands of stock traders, brokers and other financial professionals in Hong Kong may soon lose their lunch hour — and some aren't happy about it.

The city's exchange operator has proposed eliminating the midday trading pause, a long-standing tradition that gives market participants a daily respite. The move aligns Hong Kong with mainland China and other global markets that operate continuously.

Many brokers argue the break is essential for mental health and operational efficiency, allowing time to process orders and meet clients. They warn that removing it could increase burnout and reduce productivity.

The exchange counters that extended hours would boost liquidity and attract international investors. A consultation period is underway, with a decision expected later this year.
