GAM: 24-Hour London Trading Unlikely to Boost Market

The London Stock Exchange's proposed 24-hour trading system, dubbed LSE 24, is unlikely to revitalize the market, according to Paul Markham, head of GAM Investments’ global equities team. This initiative seems to be a response to the LSE's recent struggles, aiming to boost engagement by extending market access.

GAM Investments, a Zurich-based investment platform managing 12.5 billion Swiss francs in assets, believes the measure may not achieve its intended outcome. Approximately 17% of GAM's assets are invested in equities, making their perspective on equity market dynamics particularly relevant.

The LSE 24 plan represents an effort to counter a perceived decline in the LSE's standing over recent years. However, Markham's assessment suggests that increasing trading hours alone may not be sufficient to reverse this trend or significantly enhance the bourse's overall performance. The effectiveness of such a drastic operational change remains a subject of debate within the investment community.
