China’s Quant Rules Cut Volatility, Cut Turnover

The CSRC announced new quantitative trading limits in early 2024 to curb algorithmic activity in the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges. The move has already begun to smooth price swings, with daily ranges narrowing by about 15% compared with the previous year.

However, the crackdown has also reduced market turnover. Trading volumes fell by roughly 20%, as腾讯 and other major brokerages report fewer orders flowing through the system. The tighter rules have forced many high‑frequency traders to exit or shift to less regulated venues.

For investors, lower volatility means less risk of sharp price swings, but the drop in liquidity could widen spreads and make large trades more costly. Market analysts say the policy aims to protect retail investors while maintaining orderly markets.

The shift reflects a broader trend of increased regulation in China’s financial sector, with the CSRC signaling that it will continue to monitor algorithmic trading closely to prevent systemic risk.
