China will restrict exports of 12 solar technologies and core equipment to safeguard national security and maintain its technological edge in renewable energy. The Ministry of Commerce announced the move on Friday, adding the items to a list of export-controlled technologies. The new rules include a ban on exporting production technology for perovskite and tandem solar modules, an emerging technology used in space-based solar applications.

Restrictions also apply to key polysilicon production technologies. The ministry cited expanding use of solar tech in aerospace, defense, and high-security infrastructure as justification. The restrictions come as the US and India ramp up domestic solar manufacturing to reduce reliance on Chinese suppliers.

Despite these efforts, firms in both countries still depend on China for key materials and equipment. The Chinese government stated the measures were developed after industry consultation and cover only a small number of technologies. It affirmed continued support for international cooperation on green technologies.
