China Blocks US Rare Earth Export Amid Supply Chain Tensions

China has added MP Materials Corp. and USA Rare Earth Inc. to its export control list, restricting shipments of critical minerals to the US companies. The move signals Beijing's response to Washington's efforts to build alternative rare earth supply chains outside Chinese dominance.

The export controls target rare earth producers essential for advanced manufacturing and defense technologies. MP Materials, based in Colorado, operates the largest rare earth mine outside China at Mountain Pass. USA Rare Earth has been developing projects in Texas and Montana as part of US diversification strategy.

This restriction directly impacts US companies' ability to secure critical minerals needed for electric vehicles, smartphones, and military equipment. China controls roughly 60% of global rare earth processing capacity, making these controls strategically significant.

US officials have pushed for domestic rare earth production to reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains. These export controls represent a significant obstacle to that goal, potentially disrupting planned production timelines and increasing costs for American manufacturers.
