Asian Refiners Request Saudi Oil Outside Red Sea

Some Asian refiners are pushing back against Saudi Aramco’s request to pick up oil at Yanbu on the Red Sea, due to difficulty finding ships willing to sail through the dangerous waterway.

The refiners say the scarcity of vessels capable of navigating the hazardous Red Sea creates logistical challenges, making reliable transport for the cargo difficult. Ship operators cite security concerns, insurance premiums, and geopolitical tensions as reasons for declining to enter the Red Sea on a regular basis. The limited availability of qualified crew and the need for specialized safety equipment further complicate operations.

Saudi Aramco has asked the Asian refiners to arrange loading at Yanbu, a port situated on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, to streamline the delivery process and reduce costs. The company also seeks to reduce transit time for vessels, avoiding longer trips to alternative ports and improving efficiency. These logistical constraints may lead to higher freight rates and affect the competitiveness of Asian refineries.

Industry observers note that the reluctance reflects broader concerns about maritime safety and shipping companies' willingness to operate in high‑risk zones. Analysts suggest the situation may prompt refiners to consider alternative loading points or negotiate charter deals that reduce exposure to the volatile maritime environment.
