The ongoing conflict with Iran has exposed critical vulnerabilities in high-end air defense systems, according to Christian Brose, chief strategy officer of Anduril Industries Inc.. Speaking from Tokyo, Brose emphasized that traditional defense approaches struggle against sustained waves of low-cost enemy drones and missiles, which have proven effective despite advanced interceptor systems.

US-made Patriot missiles have intercepted most Iranian projectiles, but enough have penetrated defenses to cause significant damage across the Middle East. With Iran firing over 2,500 projectiles since the conflict began, the cost disparity between expensive interceptors and cheap drones presents a mounting challenge. Brose noted that lessons from this conflict mirror those from Ukraine, highlighting the need for more economical and rapidly producible defense solutions.

Anduril is developing lower-cost alternatives, including the Roadrunner vertical takeoff drone interceptors under a $250 million Pentagon contract. The company is also expanding its presence in Asia, having established operations in Japan with potential plans for local manufacturing. Brose emphasized that Japan's defense sector transformation, driven by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's push to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP, creates opportunities for innovative defense solutions that leverage technology and industrial partnerships.
