AirAsia Expands to Europe via Bahrain Hub

AirAsia is launching new international routes connecting Kuala Lumpur to Bahrain and onward to London Gatwick, establishing Bahrain as the airline's first strategic hub to Europe. The move marks a significant expansion beyond Asia as the carrier seeks to strengthen connectivity between Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia's parent company Capital A, discussed the new route with Bloomberg's Horizons Middle East and Africa anchor Joumanna Bercetche.

The Bahrain hub represents AirAsia's first major push into European markets, positioning the airline to capture traffic between Asia and Europe through a strategic Middle Eastern stopover. This expansion follows the carrier's recent announcement about being close to finalizing another large aircraft order, suggesting AirAsia is aggressively scaling its long-haul operations. The Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok-Bahrain-London Gatwick route will compete with established carriers on this corridor.

By establishing Bahrain as a gateway to Europe, AirAsia aims to leverage its low-cost model in a market traditionally dominated by full-service carriers. The strategic hub approach allows the airline to optimize aircraft utilization while offering competitive fares on long-haul routes. This expansion signals AirAsia's confidence in post-pandemic travel recovery and its ambition to become a truly global low-cost carrier.
