The International Meteor Organization, a nonprofit coordinating meteor observations, said its infrastructure suffered a "critical blow" from a cyberattack. A static page on Wednesday stated: "We recently suffered a cyberattack that dealt a critical blow to aging infrastructure, taking much of our site offline." The organization expects "several weeks of partial downtime" while transitioning to new infrastructure and services.

The IMO is prioritizing fireball observations, which can be reported on its website, and is also providing updates on its Facebook page. The group has helped forge unified standards for meteor reporting, and its databases of text, photos, and videos are considered essential by many in the field. It also publishes the bimonthly WGN journal (Working Group News) and was formally founded in 1988.

It remains unclear why an organization tracking large, fiery space objects would be targeted by a damaging cyberattack, or why someone would want to steal its mostly public data.
