Lamine Yamal: He and Mbappé Are the Best

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal says he and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé are the best players in the world, adding that he deserves the Ballon d’Or this year. The 19-year-old scored twice in Barça’s 4-2 win over Levante on Sunday, taking his season tally to seven goals in six matches.

Yamal’s form followed Barça winning La Liga and Spain winning the World Cup. The Ballon d’Or will be awarded in London on Oct. 26, with Yamal and Mbappé joined by Harry Kane and Ousmane Dembélé in an open field.

Speaking to Movistar, Yamal said, “For me, Mbappé and I are the best in the world.” He felt he could have performed better at the World Cup in North America, where he played all eight of Spain’s matches and scored once after returning from a hamstring injury.

His comments follow a news conference last week in which he said he would not “beg” to win the Ballon d’Or. Madrid’s Mbappé has also made his case as the race for the best player in the world heats up.
