Bayern Munich suffered their first setback of the season, held to a goalless draw by newly promoted Schalke. Vincent Kompany's side had opened with a 5-0 win over Stuttgart but could not break down a stubborn Schalke defense. It marked the first time Bayern failed to score since losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup July 2025, and the first Bundesliga goalless draw since more than 18 months versus Bayer Leverkusen.

Dropping points means Bayern's near two-year reign at the top of the league table is over. Kompany left Harry Kane and Michael Olise on the bench initially, with Jamal Musiala also among the substitutes. Musiala had not played since collapsing twice in friendly matches against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim last month due to a neurological issue causing seizures.

Kompany insisted there would be no concern if Musiala collapsed again. The midfielder returned to action in the second half. Bayern struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Alphonso Davies rolling a cross-shot just wide in the eighth minute.

Former Liverpool keeper Loris Karius produced key saves to deny Nathaniel Brown and later Harry Kane. Schalke appealed for a penalty for handball by Dayot Upamecano, while Manuel Neuer punched away a free-kick. Luis Díaz had a big chance before halftime but sent his shot high and wide.

Kompany introduced Kane, Olise, and Musiala after the break, but Schalke held firm. Karius had the final say with a brilliant save to deny Kane in the 87th minute, keeping the points for Schalke.
