Arizona State hockey player Matthew Mayich suffered exertional heat stroke that reduced oxygen to his brain, his attorney Rob Carey told ESPN. Mayich collapsed during an outdoor workout on Aug. 20, the first day of NCAA formal activities. He had just arrived on campus that week.

Carey stated the workout lasted over an hour with minimal water, and Mayich was disoriented before collapsing. ASU is reviewing the circumstances, with senior vice president James Rund leading the inquiry. Athletic director Graham Rossini said it's a fact-finding review, not an investigation.

Mayich's parents seek an independent investigation and suspension of the coaching staff. The NCAA warns about transition periods and heat acclimatization. Tempe Fire Medical Rescue responded to the heat-related incident; temperatures reached 90 degrees that morning.

The St. Louis Blues drafted Mayich in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. He played for the Ottawa 67's and Clarkson University before transferring to ASU.
