Oklahoma coach Brent Venables confirmed after the Sooners' 41-13 loss to No. 2 Georgia that the team discussed benching quarterback John Mateer at halftime. Mateer's nightmare first half included three consecutive turnovers — a fumble returned 85 yards for a touchdown by Georgia linebacker Chris Cole, an interception by KJ Bolden, and a forced fumble by Raylen Wilson that Cole also recovered. Despite the struggles, offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle said the coaching staff ultimately decided Mateer was still their best option to win.

Mateer finished the game 25-of-34 for 231 passing yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and two lost fumbles. The fifth-year quarterback has now committed six turnovers across his last three games, including a late interception that led to Michigan's game-winning touchdown in Week 2.

Venables described Mateer's confidence as "bruised" but emphasized that no one is more disappointed than the QB himself. Mateer denied any physical issues, stating he feels he's still playing fast and trusts the process. The Sooners fell from the AP Top 25 after a 14-6 win over New Mexico where Mateer threw two early picks.

Oklahoma has the week off before facing No. 1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry in Dallas on Oct. 10.
