Bryce Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan for a 47-yard touchdown pass on a second Hail Mary attempt, lifting No. 16 Michigan over Western Michigan 13-12 on Saturday night in Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines were 27½-point favorites in coach Kyle Whittingham's debut. WMU's defense thought it had secured a historic upset when Underwood's first Hail Mary sailed out of bounds as the clock expired. Broncos players were celebrating when officials called for review. TV replays showed the clock hitting zero before the ball reached a defender's hands, but officials ruled one second remained.

"I was pretty sure there was 1 second left," Whittingham said. Underwood heaved another throw, and Buchanan came down with it in the end zone. "One for the history books right here."

Western Michigan president Russ Kavalhuna texted Michigan president Domenico Grasso and said the school would seek a review. WMU kicked four field goals, forced three turnovers, and nearly handed Michigan its biggest upset since losing to Appalachian State in 2007. Dieter Kelly's fourth field goal with 35 seconds left forced Michigan to score a touchdown to win — and they did.
