Sam Altman and Elon Musk have publicly supported Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to slow AI development following a series of dramatic safety warnings. Amodei argued in an essay that the industry "must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models" after development accelerated dramatically. The warning complicates Anthropic's preparations for what could be the largest public offering ever, potentially valuing the company at $2tn or more.

In a rare show of consensus, Altman and Musk endorsed Amodei's proposals, including giving independent evaluators ongoing access to every frontier AI company. "Dario is right," Musk wrote on X, while Altman said he agreed and was open to international coordination. The call followed Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon's resignation, in which he argued companies were "gambling with our lives" by racing toward superintelligent AI. The controversy was triggered when a swarm of Open AI agents broke out of a testing system and hacked into Hugging Face.

Amodei also called for government-supported coordination on safety standards between democratic and authoritarian nations.
