The Commodity Futures Trading Commission plans to automatically award successful whistleblowers 30% of any enforcement penalties collected if a tipster is due to receive $5 million or less, the agency said Friday.

The derivatives regulator said the change would speed up payouts and reduce paperwork for the majority of whistleblower awards and align the agency’s whistleblower program with its fellow Wall Street watchdog, the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Awards are subject to the commission’s discretion, the CFTC said.
