Great Britain's Zoe Backstedt claimed silver in the women's time trial at the UCI World Road Championships in Montreal. The 21-year-old Welsh rider finished 40.11 seconds behind defending champion Marlen Reusser of Switzerland, who retained her crown on her 35th birthday with a winning time of 50 minutes 24.44 seconds. Belgium's Remco Evenepoel became the first rider to win the men's time trial for a fourth consecutive occasion, finishing the 39.2km course in 44:53.13.

He beat Italian runner-up Filippo Ganna by 57.31 seconds, while French rider Paul Seixas was third. In the women's event, Backstedt started third from last and set the early pace, but Reusser paced her effort brilliantly on the long, winding course to secure gold. Callum Thornley finished 10th for Great Britain in the under-23 race, while Ethan Hayter was 18th in the elite men's event.

Backstedt said she dreamed of winning after a storming start but respected Reusser's strength. Reusser, a four-time European champion, also won time-trial stages at the Tour de France Femmes and Giro d'Italia Women this year.
