NHL Free Agency
The Utah Mammoth locked up espn.com forward Nick Schmaltz with an eight-year, $64 million contract extension, preventing the 28-year-old from testing free agency this summer. The deal keeps the playmaking center in Salt Lake City through 2032 and represents the largest contract in franchise history. Schmaltz, who notched 22 goals and 57 assists last season, had been one of the top pending free agents available. The Mammoth's aggressive move signals their intent to build around their young core after missing the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.
