The San Francisco Giants confirmed a major blow as pitcher Hayden Birdsong requires season-ending Tommy John surgery, immediately removing him from the rotation plans. Concurrently, the Tampa Bay Rays placed shortstop Taylor Walls on the injured list due to a right oblique strain, which opens a roster spot that prospect Carson Williams may now secure for the start of the schedule.
