NASA's Artemis II mission has reached a critical recovery phase as the Orion crew capsule splashes down near San Diego. Following a brief technical issue that temporarily disrupted communications between the spacecraft and recovery teams, contact has been restored. The crew module has been powered down to prepare for safe recovery operations.
Recovery teams are conducting thorough safety checks, deploying air quality sensors to detect potentially hazardous fumes from hydrazine propellant or ammonia coolant systems. The 16- to 20-person recovery team will stabilize the bobbing capsule using specialized equipment including a sea anchor and inflatable collar. Navy divers will approach the spacecraft once safety conditions are confirmed.
Before astronaut extraction can begin, divers must install an inflatable raft called a front porch beneath Orion's side hatch. This meticulous process ensures crew safety during the final recovery phase of NASA's historic mission, marking another milestone in humanity's return to lunar exploration.
