Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce is expected to miss several weeks after aggravating a left heel injury in Sunday's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The injury is to the same heel that Pierce had surgically repaired in March, and his recovery from that procedure stretched longer than expected, with him missing training camp and returning to practice only last month. Pierce will attempt to rehab the injury rather than have surgery, with the hope that he could return midseason.

Surgery remains an option depending on rehab progress, and he is likely to be placed on injured reserve during recovery. The Colts quickly addressed his absence by agreeing to a deal with veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton, a free agent. Slayton, a fellow member of the Giants' 2019 draft class alongside Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, caught 37 passes for 538 yards last season with New York, starting 12 games.

He has averaged 14.5 yards per catch last season and 15 yards per catch over his career. With Pierce limited in Week 1 and missing most of Sunday's game, Jones has averaged just 6.1 yards per attempt through two games, down from 8.1 yards per attempt last season. The Colts were already thin at receiver due to Ashton Dulin's ankle injury.
