The Trump administration is moving forward with a $24.3 billion sale of 48 advanced F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, despite internal intelligence reports warning that China could acquire or steal the warplane’s technology. The State Department announced the package, which includes a spare engine, stating it will improve Saudi Arabia’s capability to deter current and future threats by strengthening its homeland defense. The agency formally notified Congress of the pending sale on Thursday, one day after The New York Times reported on U.S. intelligence concerns.

If completed, Saudi Arabia would become only the second Middle East country to possess F-35 jets, after Israel. Internal reports from the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency raised questions about securing sites with F-35 technology and the access Chinese military personnel have to Saudi bases. Concerns also focus on Saudi Arabia’s use of Chinese technology in telecommunications and defense installations, as well as China’s sale of ballistic missiles to the kingdom.

President Trump announced the deal last November, days before a visit by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has long sought the jets to build up the Saudi military. Lawmakers have 30 days to review the sale, though a resolution to block it would likely fail given current congressional recesses. Some Israeli officials have expressed worry that the transaction could erode Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region.
