The statement came after Macklemore was dropped from the tour for saying "Free Palestine" onstage. The tour's promoter, Messina Touring Group, removed Macklemore after venues refused to let him perform.

Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, cited Macklemore's "broader history of antisemitic rhetoric." Four supporting acts, including Finneas and Beoga, withdrew in solidarity. Finneas wrote, "Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed." Sheeran expressed concern about venues requiring pre-approval of performer content, saying it "should never happen in the free world.".
