Vietnam Grab Drivers Plan Weekend Boycott Over Commission Fees

Vietnam drivers for Grab Holdings Ltd. are calling on fellow independent contractors to engage in a work stoppage this weekend to protest the ride-hailing company’s commission rate, which they say is excessive and threatens their ability to earn a living wage. The campaign has gained momentum in ride-hailing driver groups on social media in the last few days, with drivers saying that Grab takes as much as a 50% cut of fares. The company’s rate, combined with rising fuel prices and vehicle maintenance costs, reduce the earnings of drivers too much, they say.

In addition to asking for a rate more favorable to the gig workers, the groups are calling on Grab for more transparent policies and consultations with drivers. The boycott reflects growing dissatisfaction among gig workers over platform economics and cost pressures.
