St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol was ejected Friday night after confronting plate umpire Doug Eddings over a hat adjustment request to rookie reliever Hancel Rincon during his major league debut against the Colorado Rockies. The 24-year-old right-hander entered in the sixth inning wearing his hat tilted left. After the first batter, Eddings asked Rincon to straighten it at the request of Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman. Rincon complied but then struggled, allowing a triple, wild pitch, inside-the-park home run, and single before being pulled.

During the pitching change, Marmol confronted Eddings, calling it a "power-hungry move" and noting former pitchers like Dontrelle Willis, CC Sabathia, and Pedro Strop wore hats more tilted. Eddings assessed a pitch clock violation before ejecting Marmol, characterizing the hat rule as an "unwritten rule" about distractions. Rincon said through an interpreter he had no idea why he was told to adjust it. The Cardinals rallied to win 7-6, their third victory in four games, leaving them 3½ games back of the final NL wild card spot.
