Leonardo SpA, the Italian state-controlled defense company, is deepening ties with Ukraine's military-technology sector through its new Kyiv unit. CEO Lorenzo Mariani stated the unit seeks partnership, investment, or acquisition opportunities. The subsidiary aims to integrate innovative Ukrainian startups directly onto the ground. The unit will also support the development of the Michelangelo air-defense system, with the first test planned in Ukraine by year-end. Leonardo is already testing the system's counter-drone component in Italy and plans to deploy an artillery-based layer in Ukraine. Michelangelo is being pitched to export customers requiring protection against drones and ballistic threats. Mariani emphasized prioritizing existing customers already using Leonardo sensors to ease integration.

The strategy extends to strengthening European defense capabilities amid a weakening trans-Atlantic alliance. Mariani cited the SAMP/T missile-defense system, produced by Eurosam, as comparable to US Patriot systems. He also outlined the Bromo space venture with Airbus SE and Thales SA, expecting full operational status by January 1, 2028. The project aims to close Europe's technology gap with the US in satellite communications. Leonardo continues pursuing consolidation strategies with Rheinmetall AG on land systems and Baykar on drones, remaining open to further alliances to accelerate investment.
