Oscar Piastri has received a three-place grid penalty for the Italian Grand Prix after impeding Liam Lawson during qualifying at Monza. The McLaren driver drops from third to sixth, promoting Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen each by one position. The incident occurred late in Q2 when Piastri, on an out-lap approaching the first chicane, slowed for Verstappen but then moved ahead of Lawson through the chicane, delaying the Racing Bulls driver on his final flying lap.

The FIA stewards accepted Piastri had limited options given the information provided by his team, noting he was advised Verstappen and Lawson were crossing but not that both were on push laps. Piastri stated he did not realize Lawson was approaching until reaching Turn 1. Lawson, already starting from the back due to power unit penalties, failed to advance from Q2 and qualified 14th. His presence in Q3 was intended to provide Verstappen a tow on Monza's long straights.

Verstappen ultimately qualified sixth but moves to fifth following Piastri's penalty. The standard three-place drop applies for impeding during qualifying. Both drivers acknowledged the situation was far from ideal, with Lawson noting the team's focus remained on race preparation.
