Why Code Isn't Your Job Security

Many engineers believe job security comes from writing clean code and shipping fast. But on many teams, work isn't done when the code is finished—it's done when the right people approve it. Product, business, QA, and senior engineers act as silent gatekeepers whose sign-off determines if your feature was truly accepted.

Treating approvals as a real dependency is critical. If you only send a message and get no response, you'll miss the invisible gate. The organization grades delivery based on acceptance, not effort. In these environments, you must drive the approval to completion, not just notify people.

High turnover breeds ambiguity, which becomes a weapon. Document what you understood, asked, and confirmed, plus who was responsible for sign-off. Don't start coding on a vague ticket; clarify expectations early. Align with potential blockers before they stall your PR. Use existing code patterns for speed and consistency.
