The Toronto Maple Leafs kicked off the 2026 NHL Draft by selecting Penn State's Gavin McKenna with the No. 1 overall pick, adding immediate offensive talent to an already stacked lineup. McKenna dominated the draft conversation as one of the most dynamic playmakers available, giving Toronto a potential cornerstone forward.

McKenna's collegiate debut showed his rapid adaptation after a slow start. He finished his freshman season with 15 goals and 36 assists in 35 games, totaling 51 points that ranked third in the Big Ten. Before Penn State, he posted 41 goals and 88 points in 56 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers, helping them capture the WHL title. That performance pushed Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg to challenge for the top selection.

San Jose selected Stenberg second overall, adding another weapon alongside Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. The Sharks will count on him to help replace William Eklund, who was recently traded to Ottawa. Buffalo addressed their defensive hole by taking Daxon Rudolph fourth overall, replacing Bowen Byram after his trade to Chicago. These moves reshape both franchises' cores heading into next season.

McKenna joins an offense that finished middle-of-the-pack last year, immediately raising expectations. While pairing him with Auston Matthews right away may be ambitious, his skill set suggests he can contribute at the NHL level sooner rather than later.
