The Toronto Maple Leafs selected Penn State winger Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick Friday night, ending speculation about any draft-day surprises. McKenna, 18, posted 15 goals and 51 points in 35 games for the Nittany Lions, making him the consensus top prospect. The Whitehorse, Yukon native became the first selection of Toronto's new management regime under general manager John Chayka.

McKenna previously starred with the Western Hockey League's Medicine Hat Tigers, recording 79 goals and 165 points in 133 games before joining Penn State for the 2025-26 season. The NCAA eligibility rule change for former major junior players opened this pathway for McKenna, who capitalized immediately with his elite scoring and playmaking abilities. His transition to tougher college competition showcased his all-around game.

Toronto held the top selection after winning the draft lottery on May 5, marking their first No. 1 pick since selecting Auston Matthews in Buffalo a decade ago. The Maple Leafs missed the playoffs in 2025-26 for the first time since drafting Matthews, creating urgency for this rebuild. They also introduced new coach Jim Hiller Thursday.

McKenna's defensive game needs development to match his offensive creativity, but Toronto expects him to compete for a roster spot this fall. The team also signed defenseman Darren Raddysh to an eight-year, $68 million extension while reshaping their goaltending situation. This selection represents the cornerstone of Toronto's new direction.
