WTA Finals Move to Indian Wells After Early Split from Saudi Arabia

The WTA will relocate its season-ending Finals to Indian Wells, California, ending its partnership with Saudi Arabia one year ahead of schedule. The tournament, featuring the top eight singles players and doubles teams, runs November 8-15 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Chair Valerie Camillo praised the venue's world-class facilities and passionate fan base as ideal for showcasing women's tennis.

Saudi Arabia had hosted the Finals for the past two years under a three-year agreement signed in April 2024, which included record prize money. However, ongoing Iran-US tensions complicated planning logistics, prompting the mutual contract termination. The move follows significant backlash when the WTA first chose Riyadh, with critics accusing Saudi Arabia of using sports events to improve its international image amid human rights concerns.

WTA chief executive Steve Simon had previously defended the Saudi partnership, arguing it supported meaningful change in the region and created opportunities for women in tennis. He emphasized the tour's 50-year history of breaking barriers while expanding globally across different cultures and systems.

Indian Wells already stages WTA events through the BNP Paribas Open each March, making it a proven destination for elite tennis. The early termination raises questions about the WTA's Middle East strategy and whether other governing bodies will reconsider similar partnerships.
