Wales trims squad ahead of Nations Championship after Barbarians win

Steve Tandy will slash his Wales roster early next week, following a 33-31 triumph over the Barbarians at the Allianz Stadium. The uncapped warm‑up featured debutants Rhys Barratt, Ben Warren, Harrison Keddie and Ryan Woodman, while veterans Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake returned from long injuries. The narrow win gave the side a confidence boost before their opening Nations Championship clash with Fiji.

Tandy initially named a 48-man group, but injuries to Louie Hennessey, Keiron Assiratti and Liam Belcher force a further cut of at least 11 players, leaving a squad of 32‑34. An influx of 12 players from English and French clubs, including Exeter lock Dafydd Jenkins and Bristol winger Louis Rees‑Zammit, becomes available now that the Barbarians game fell outside World Rugby’s international window.

The coach stresses consistency as the benchmark for success in the three‑match tournament against Fiji, Argentina and South Africa. He will assess fitness and form over the next few days before finalising selections. Wales must translate the hard‑earned win into steady performances if they hope to progress beyond the group stage.
