The third stage of the Vuelta a Espana was abandoned on Monday due to severe weather and hailstorms in the French Pyrenees. The storm hit as riders scaled the Col de Mont-Louis with 15km remaining of the 174km ride from Gruissan to Font-Romeu.

Overall race leader Tadej Pogacar indicated for the main group to pull off, and drenched riders took shelter in a nearby hotel. Organizers announced the stage would not resume, meaning there would be no winner or podium ceremony. Conditions had been warm earlier, with a five-man breakaway leading.

Pogacar, aiming to complete his Grand Tour collection, won the opening time trial. Britain's Matt Brennan sprinted to victory in the second stage. The general classification remains led by Pogacar at 4 hours 58mins 40secs, followed closely by Wout van Aert and James Brennan.
