Ukraine Appeals IOC Decision on Russia Reinstatement

Ukraine's National Olympic Committee (NOC) has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, challenging the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to provisionally reinstate Russia. The IOC had suspended the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in 2023 due to the war in Ukraine but lifted the ban on 7 July 2026, deeming it "no longer applicable".

This reversal allows Russian athletes to potentially compete for their nation in the 2028 Olympic Games. It follows the IOC's earlier recommendation in December 2025 for federations to readmit Russian and Belarusian Under-23 athletes.

The Ukrainian NOC, however, considers the IOC's move "premature" and a violation of the Olympic Charter. They argue the decision was made without adequate verification that the issues leading to the ROC's suspension, following Ukraine's appeal on October 6, 2023, have been resolved.
