Northampton Saints lock JJ van der Mescht has earned a Springboks call-up after being invited to a virtual alignment camp. The 26-year-old second-row player, who joined from Stade Francais last summer, has impressed with consistent form. Van der Mescht represented South Africa Under-20s at the 2019 World Championships but remains uncapped at senior international level.

According to Opta statistics, Van der Mescht ranks among the Premiership's dominant carriers, with only teammate Sam Graham recording a higher percentage. Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus specifically mentioned the 23-stone lock has "performed really well for his club this season." This virtual camp presents a clear pathway to Test rugby.

"For every South African, it is a target to play for South Africa," Van der Mescht told BBC Look East earlier this year. The physical lock has dreamed of wearing the Springboks jersey since childhood, stating "since you're a little kid, you always want to play for the Springboks." The camp marks his first significant step toward that goal.
