World number one Aryna Sabalenka suffered a surprising defeat at the Italian Open, falling to veteran Sorana Cirstea in the third round despite twice holding a set and break advantage. The world No. 1 struggled with her serve throughout, getting broken six times as her most improved weapon betrayed her when it mattered most. The Belarusian left frustration evident, slapping at a ball in irritation as the match slipped away.

Cirstea, who plans to retire at season's end, demonstrated remarkable resilience. Sabalenka made 72% of first serves but won only 56% of those points, while converting just 11 of 26 second-serve points. The match turned when Sabalenka lost five consecutive games in the second set and her service games remained shaky throughout the decider. She even had her back treated by the trainer at 4-3 down in the final set.

Defending champion Jasmine Paolini also departed the tournament, falling 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 to Belgium's Elise Mertens. The Italian's exit means both top seeds in Rome have now fallen before the quarterfinals, raising questions about Sabalenka's preparation for the upcoming French Open. Cirstea, meanwhile, advances to face either Maria Sakkari or Anna Kalinskaya in the next round.
