Tadej Pogacar claimed his first Milan-San Remo title in a thrilling sprint finish, edging out Tom Pidcock by half a wheel after a dramatic 298km race. The world champion launched his decisive attack with 22km remaining, dropping Mathieu van der Poel on the final climb before battling Pidcock to the line.

The Slovenian's victory was remarkable given he recovered from a crash just before the Cipressa climb to rejoin the main group. Pogacar, already considered one of cycling's greatest, has now won four of the five 'Monuments' - leaving only Paris-Roubaix to complete the set. The 27-year-old's 11th Monument win moves him level with Roger de Vlaeminck into equal second place on the all-time list.

Pidcock's performance was equally impressive, with the British rider matching Pogacar's pace on the Poggio descent and sprinting him to the line. The double Olympic mountain bike champion came into the race in strong form after winning Milano-Torino. Wout van Aert claimed third place, sprinting clear of the chasing pack late in the race.
