Ospreys Owners Set to Buy Cardiff Rugby

Y11 Sport and Media, current owners of Ospreys, have been confirmed as the preferred bidders to purchase Cardiff Rugby from the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). Both clubs will remain separate entities under Y11 ownership, but the Ospreys’ professional future beyond 2026-27 remains uncertain.

The WRU initiated the sale after Cardiff went into administration in April 2025. This move aligns with long-term plans to reduce Wales’ four professional teams to three. While Scarlets and Dragons are expected to retain their licenses, Ospreys face an uncertain future post-2026-27 depending on URC restructuring.

Fans remain concerned, particularly in Swansea where the council is funding a £5 million redevelopment of St Helen's for Ospreys. Questions also linger over how this affects player development, regional identity, and Cardiff supporters who have opposed the deal. Y11 and WRU are now in an exclusivity period to finalize terms.

Lance Bradley, Ospreys CEO, acknowledged the lack of communication during talks but emphasized continuity for both clubs. He confirmed that if the deal proceeds, Ospreys will continue competing in the URC** and European competitions until at least 2027.
