New York Knicks star Luke Anunoby says the planned launch of a bespoke European NBA league could take UK basketball to the "next level". The proposed NBA Europe, slated for October 2027, will feature between 12 and 16 teams, with London and Manchester expected to join.

The NBA closed the franchise‑bid window in June, and the league hopes to unveil team identities this year. Bids for each host city ranged from $500 million (£372 m) to $1 billion (£745 m).

Anunoby is the leading UK‑born NBA player, having helped the Knicks win their first title since 1973. He joins a growing UK quartet that includes Portland Trail Blazers’ Jeremy Sochan, Boston Celtics’ Amari Williams and Dallas Mavericks’ Tobi Lawal.

Laura Pinnell, NBA Europe VP, said demand has been strong, especially as bidding closed, and highlighted the UK as a major opportunity. Anunoby spent his off‑season in London, investing in a grassroots court in Camden, and aims to help the Knicks secure a second championship.

The NBA’s vision is to grow the sport in Europe, boosting youth participation and fan engagement. By aligning the launch with the 2027‑28 NBA season, the league will also offer a platform for local talent and create new opportunities for clubs across the continent.
