Fifteen years after the tragic murder of his wife Michaela McAreavey on their honeymoon in Mauritius, John McAreavey has spoken publicly about his journey of grief and hope. The 27-year-old teacher was found strangled in a hotel bath just 12 days after marrying John in December 2010. Two hotel workers were tried for her murder in 2012 but found not guilty, leaving the case unresolved.

In a revealing interview on the GAA Social podcast, McAreavey shared how he has navigated life without his wife while continuing to fight for justice. Despite the pain, he says he has found happiness and gratitude, crediting his faith and the support of his second wife Tara, whom he married in 2016. The couple has two children together. McAreavey admits that 'moving on is a term that has never been comfortable for me' but emphasizes the importance of finding ways to move forward while keeping Michaela's memory alive.

McAreavey remains determined to pursue justice for his wife, despite the passage of 15 years. He has engaged with Irish authorities and the Department of Foreign Affairs to press for diplomatic action with Mauritius. While acknowledging the challenges of the case, including contamination of the crime scene and the death of a key witness, he maintains hope that those responsible could still face trial. 'The fight will never go away,' McAreavey says, driven by a sense of responsibility to Michaela and his belief that justice must be served.
