The 2026-27 Irish League season is set to commence on time following the overwhelming approval of three key proposals at a recent extraordinary general meeting (EGM). The Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) had convened the EGM to avert a potential delay to the new Irish Premiership and Championship seasons.

Despite initial concerns about reaching the necessary 90% quorum of member clubs, the meeting proceeded, with a significant majority voting in favor of NIFL's proposals. These included the Approval of League Restructuring, the Adoption of League Rules (2025/26), and the Approval of Competition Rules (2026/27). The proposals were supported by representatives from men's and women's Premiership, Championship, and Premier Intermediate League (PIL) clubs.

The restructuring sees NIFL overseeing only the top two leagues, with the Championship expanded to 16 teams. The PIL is replaced by a new 12-team Conference League, run by the NAFL. However, an appeal by Banbridge Town, who were removed from the NIFL structure, was upheld by the Irish Football Association (IFA), potentially impacting the league composition.
