Ireland faces New Zealand in their first-ever Test match at Stormont from 27-30 May, hoping to upset the fifth-ranked visitors. The Irish side has struggled in the longest format since gaining Test status in 2017, winning just three of their 12 matches. Their last victory came against Zimbabwe in Belfast last July, but they remain unranked having not played enough Tests to qualify.

Captain Andy Balbirnie acknowledged the gulf in experience between the sides, noting that New Zealand's players have extensive first-class and Test backgrounds. The Black Caps recently defeated West Indies and Zimbabwe in 2025, showcasing their red-ball pedigree. Ireland lacks the domestic infrastructure that produces Test-ready players, with their inter-provincial tournament last held in 2019.

Ireland's preparations have been hampered by injuries, with veteran batter Paul Stirling ruled out alongside Gavin Hoey, Barry McCarthy, Jordan Neill and Josh Little. This opens opportunities for four potential debutants including all-rounders Jake Egan and Tom Mayes. Around 75% of tickets have been sold for the opening days, suggesting strong local support.

Balbirnie emphasized his team won't shy away from the challenge despite being underdogs. Ireland targets taking the match close to four days rather than forcing a result, with more realistic opportunities upcoming in T20 against India and ODIs against Afghanistan later this summer.
