The Rugby Football League has named Ian Nolan as its new chief executive, effective 1 October. The 44-year-old arrives from Science in Sport after a stint at Manchester United, bringing commercial experience to a governing body that has operated under interim leadership since Tony Sutton departed last September.

Abi Ekoku held the role briefly before leaving in April to become CEO at St Helens following Mike Rush's exit. Rhodri Jones then stepped in while maintaining his position as managing director of RL Commercial. The transition comes days after the sport celebrated its best-attended Magic WKND, drawing more than 80,000 fans across the weekend.

RFL chair Nigel Wood described the appointment as critical for a period that will define the game's commercial trajectory. Nolan inherits a sport riding attendance momentum but facing persistent questions about broadcast revenue, international calendar alignment, and the long-term viability of the professional structure below Super League.

His background in sports nutrition and Premier League operations suggests the RFL wants someone who can translate commercial partnerships into sustainable growth. The real test arrives when the next broadcast cycle negotiations begin — Nolan's ability to package the sport's improved event-day product for rights holders will determine whether the current optimism survives contact with market reality.
