F1 2026: Red Bull's 'Scary' Advantage Revealed in Bahrain Testing

Mercedes driver George Russell has described Red Bull's performance advantage in pre-season testing as 'pretty scary' after observing their dominance at Bahrain. The Briton revealed that Red Bull appears to be half a second to a full second per lap faster than their rivals in energy deployment, a significant margin in Formula 1 competition.

Russell's assessment comes as F1 undergoes its biggest rule change in history, with new engines, chassis, tyres, and fuel specifications for 2026. The new regulations have made energy management crucial, with engines producing roughly half their power through electrical systems. GPS data suggests Red Bull's power unit can deploy electrical energy longer than competitors, an impressive feat considering they've built their engine company from scratch and partnered with Ford.

Despite Red Bull technical director Pierre Wache disputing Mercedes' claims, stating that Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren are ahead of them, Russell maintains Red Bull has been the team to beat since testing began in Spain last month. The Mercedes driver also highlighted challenges with the new cars, noting drivers must use unusual techniques like taking corners in first gear to maintain engine revs for energy recovery. With Melbourne testing approaching, Russell suggests Red Bull's advantage could prove decisive when the season begins.
