England Captain George Williams Faces Neck Surgery Ahead of World Cup

Warrington Wolves and England captain George Williams will undergo neck surgery in the next week or two, putting his participation in the Rugby League World Cup in serious doubt. The 28-year-old has led England since 2023 and was expected to captain the team in their opening World Cup match against Tonga in Perth on 17 October.

Warrington head coach Sam Burgess confirmed the news before kick-off, describing it as unfortunate but expressing optimism about the recovery. "We've decided to take the positive route," Burgess said. "Given the nature of where the injury is, we're happy that we've got hold of it. Hopefully he can make a great recovery and we'll see him back - if it's not this year, then hopefully next year."

New England head coach Brian McDermott, appointed on Thursday, had previously stated he had "no intentions" of changing captains before the World Cup. The timing is particularly problematic with the Super League Grand Final scheduled for 3 October - just two weeks before England's World Cup opener. Williams' absence would represent a significant blow to England's hopes of challenging for the tournament.
