Durham chief baffled by doubts over Stokes’ mindset

Durham chief executive Tim Bostock said he was bemused by media speculation over England captain Ben Stokes’ mental state after the London nightclub breach. Stokes, 35, missed the second Test against New Zealand for violating the team’s midnight curfew. Coach Brendon McCullum expressed worry but stopped short of confirming a return as skipper. He returned to Durham training last weekend, quelling early retirement rumors.

Bostock insisted the all‑rounder is “absolutely fine”, describing him as “very positive”. He noted Stokes turned up for Durham’s fixture against Northamptonshire on Friday, bowled nine overs for 0‑26 and took a catch. Fast‑bowler Gus Atkinson also featured, taking two wickets early in the innings. The investigation into the altercation involving security staff and a Saracens player continues, with no update expected before the weekend.

England introduced a curfew after off‑field incidents in last winter’s Ashes and hopes to resolve the case swiftly so Stokes can lead the side at Trent Bridge for the third Test. Bostock warned that if county call‑ups clash with the Test schedule, Durham may have to withdraw the pair. Supporters have voiced disappointment and optimism as the captain prepares for his next test of leadership.
