Dragons Target Historic Semi‑Final Against Montpellier

Dragons look to carry Wales’ banner into a European semi‑final against Montpellier on Sunday, the first time a Welsh side has reached a Challenge Cup quarter‑final in a decade. Coach Filo Tiatia and co‑captain Ben Carter rally supporters from Ospreys, Cardiff and Scarlets, noting the historic weight of the match for their fans and the country.

Previous semi‑finals saw the Dragons fall to Clermont in 2007 and Edinburgh in 2016, the latter ending in a 22‑12 loss to Montpellier, who later lifted the trophy. Only two players from that 2016 squad, hooker Elliot Dee and full‑back Angus O’Brien, remain in the current lineup.

Dragons name wing David Richards in the starting line‑up, with Dee preferred to Brodie Coghlan at hooker. Montpellier field a pack that includes Wales lock Adam Beard and former England number eight Billy Vunipola, absent this week. A fierce clash awaits as co‑captain Ben Carter will face Beard, the former Ospreys lock, in a showdown that feels more than a simple European battle.

Reaching the final in Bilbao on 22 May would mark the Dragons deepest European run ever, a goal the squad believes attainable. Coach Tiatia insists the team must bring the right mindset, while Carter stresses the need for a top‑class effort to secure a place in the final. Winning would cement Wales’ presence in elite European rugby.
