Danny Care has publicly questioned England's decision to include South Africa-born Benhard Janse van Rensburg in the training squad for this summer's Tests. The former England scrum-half told the BBC's Rugby Union Weekly podcast that selecting the 29-year-old centre means Ollie Lawrence and Max Ojomoh lose their chance to attend next week's camp at the expense of a player who made just one 20-minute appearance for South Africa's under-20s back in 2016.

Janse van Rensburg moved to England in 2021 to play for London Irish and was cleared for England duty last November following an RFU appeal. He qualifies under World Rugby's five-year residency rule on 8 July. England have been hunting a ball-carrying centre to replace Manu Tuilagi's power since 2024, and head coach Steve Borthwick believes the Bristol Bears centre can fill that void despite Ojomoh's man-of-the-match performance on his England debut against Argentina in November.

Care insists international rugby must remain more exclusive than residency alone allows. Janse van Rensburg will miss the opening Test against South Africa on 4 July but could feature against Fiji on 11 July and Argentina on 18 July.
