Cherie DeVaux breaks barrier as Golden Tempo wins Derby

Cherie DeVaux made history at Churchill Downs, becoming the first female trainer to capture the Kentucky Derby. Her 23‑1 longshot, Golden Tempo, surged from last place to win by a neck, edging the 4‑1 favourite Renegade as Joe Ortiz urged the colt home in a breathless finish in front of a roaring crowd during the 152nd running.

Renegade, ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., drifted 15 lengths back midway, attempting a rare inside‑gate victory not seen in four decades. With half a mile left on the track's 1¼‑mile distance, Golden Tempo slipped from the rear of the 18‑horse field, unleashed a final drive and posted a time of 2:02.27. DeVaux, who started as an exercise rider 22 years ago, said she never imagined standing atop the winner’s circle.

Ortiz followed his Derby triumph with a Kentucky Oaks win aboard Always A Runner, joining a select group of nine jockeys to claim both races in the same season. The double, achieved on his eighth Derby ride, underscores his versatility and cements a memorable spring campaign for the Ortiz family, adding to the Ortiz legacy while DeVaux’s breakthrough may inspire more women to pursue top‑level training roles.
