Cardiff delivered the kind of Friday night at the Arms Park that Welsh rugby desperately needed. Facing an injury crisis missing six Wales internationals including Josh Adams and Taulupe Faletau, plus Josh McNally called away for RAF duty, they beat the Stormers 22-16 to claim their first United Rugby Championship play-off spot and a Champions Cup berth next season.

Stormers dominated the early scrum and took the lead through Adre Smith, but Cardiff rallied with four tries against one. Wings Jacob Beetham and Tom Bowen shared three tries, while fly-half Ioan Lloyd defied gravity with a score just before half-time. Led by player-of-the-match Taine Basham, Cardiff's defence held firm for 75 minutes as the South Africans ran out of ideas.

Leigh Halfpenny, who announced his retirement this month, made a three-minute cameo in the 78th minute, drawing the loudest cheer of the night. He called it special to finish at the Arms Park. For a Welsh rugby season defined by turmoil and financial uncertainty, a night when 10,000 fans celebrated a genuine upset provided exactly the joy Cardiff had been chasing all year.
